One would think it’s quite a narrow field, but with the amount of high-rises in Shanghai I’m not surprised at just how busy they are!

So, they needed some photography for their corporate brochure, covering some of the different services they have: sales, technical inspection teams, engineers and friendly customer service representatives!

This might look like your little backyard TONKA truck, but it isn’t. It’s the real deal. The Real McKoy!

I must admit that when I was first asked to photograph a real size excavator my jaw dropped. Half from a boyish excitement that brought me back to countless hours lost in my home’s backyard, playing with my trucks as a boy… and the other half was a bit afraid. Taking a beautiful product photo of something so massive it challenging, to say the least!

This excavator was not only shiny with metal and plexiglass surfaces, but the body is round, which always makes it a huge challenge with reflective surfaces. Four hours of work, and here’s the result:

I had always been curious about the place as it’s one of the first buildings you really notice coming from the Shanghai airport, just before you take the bridge into the city.

The day covered not only CEO portraits and architecture, but their internal services and structure – with a focus on the technology they use.

Pack-shots never get the same glory as still-life, beauty or even fashion photos… to most, they are rather un-sexy to the eye.

By definition a pack-shot is a photo of a product, sitting at 45 degrees, at the same angle that you would see it if it was presented in front of you (so usually 45 degrees, again), on white background. It’s a technical shot of your product. It’s a photo that explains what your product is. Nothing glamourous, nothing sexy, just your product alone… naked.

I enjoy doing pack-shots. To most I would assume this sounds absurd. But it’s like taking nudes of a model, there’s nothing to hide imperfections, there’s nothing to play with or distract. That’s it, that’s all.

But as a photographer, it really allows me to refocus on lighting and technique. These photos become, very quickly, extremely demanding… especially with cosmetics. You start to look at each highlight. The texture. Everything counts.

to our new studio: The Junction

Located in
Shanghai – just south of Ikea – I have found the
perfect space for the studio. Associated with TEE
HEE Asia

and Lost
Pensivos we have taken the whole 900sqm floor of a
renovated factory space.


The Junction
studio consists of two shooting areas of over 200sqm. The main
studio has a 6×6m 5-faced shooting cove and the south-west
facing windows provide wonderful light of an afternoon- a fact
which is well appreciated by our clients relaxing in the
lounge area while photo shoots are taking place. The second
studio is located on the on the north side of the building. It
is a smaller studio, perfect for table-top, product and
still-life photography. The two studios are linked by a fully
equipped make-up room, with two professionally lit make-up
stations.

I’m leading the new brand: The Junction Studios, geared towards finding and promoting local and international talents.

We found a wonderful space to set-up shop in. An old neon factory the whole floor, even after renovations, keeps the industrial feel of the place. Today, there are four of us sharing the space: Tee-Hee Asia, Lost Pensivos (Video production house), Eurologos (translation) and The Junction Studios.
