These date from a while back, I had to dig a little bit in my archives, but I thought I’d pull them out here for a look. Pack-shots never get the same glory as still-life, beauty or even fashion photos… to most, they are rather un-sexy to the eye.
By definition a pack-shot is a photo of a product, sitting at 45 degrees, at the same angle that you would see it if it was presented in front of you (so usually 45 degrees, again), on white background. It’s a technical shot of your product. It’s a photo that explains what your product is. Nothing glamourous, nothing sexy, just your product alone… naked.
I enjoy doing pack-shots. To most I would assume this sounds absurd. But it’s like taking nudes of a model, there’s nothing to hide imperfections, there’s nothing to play with or distract. That’s it, that’s all.
But as a photographer, it really allows me to refocus on lighting and technique. These photos become, very quickly, extremely demanding… especially with cosmetics. You start to look at each highlight. The texture. Everything counts.
