All the clothes keep a fairly dark colours and are more wintery, which in a sense works quite well (in my head at least) with the undergoing theme of the underground, the secret society – maybe I’m too old and keep remembering the big red threat and the KGB. But most exciting of all was the location, we shot at the old slaughter house of Shanghai. The architecture is absolutely gorgeous (and spooky) with cold cement everywhere and passage ways going around like an Escher drawing.

We found a wonderful space to set-up shop in. An old neon factory the whole floor, even after renovations, keeps the industrial feel of the place. Today, there are four of us sharing the space: Tee-Hee Asia, Lost Pensivos (Video production house), Eurologos (translation) and The Junction Studios.

I was more than happy to help out! I always find it interesting to work with young and upcoming talents that are discovering themselves, their style and a new world of possibilities.

Over the course of the next week or so, I’ll try to post all 5 shoots here on the blog, as you’ll see it’s 5 very different styles and approaches. We worked on lighting, location scouting and the styling of the models.

Here, Velly designed a very flashy and colourful Spring/Summer collection. We shot it in studio, with simple, all around lighting, using a sun umbrella as the main source. She wanted to get that typical photo-effect of lomography / old school polaroid – think SX-70.

The challenge with this in particular project came especially in post production where using PhotoShop filters to create the SX-70 look-and-feel also altered the colour of the garments. But, with a little trick of layers I managed to bring back enough of the original colours, while still keeping the Lomo effect.

Florence is a French table-top, textile and set stylist, and we often worked on paid assignments for clients… and it felt like a tease where we had lots of fun creating the photos, but we wanted even more. Florence and I often discussed doing still-life photography and building a stronger and stronger portfolio.

Recently our little project has turned into a bit more of an obsession with texture. It’s all about texture. And some of the best examples of plays of textures are with cosmetics still-lifes… so it felt natural that we’d just jump right in.

Here’s the results of our first tests, and I would say “expect more” as we fine tune our skills and ideas!

Deep down, below all the photography beauty, I think I’m a geek. The reason I enjoy industrial and corporate photography so much is that I get to get inside all those “secret” locations and see how stuff is made and how it works. Of course, it’s always important to respect company and trade secrets when I’m shooting, so I often work very closely with the clients to guarantee the image is both beautiful… and not too revealing.

So, when Pratt & Whitney called me to come and do some photos of their new plant in shanghai, I was, naturally, very excited.

The plant is a joint venture with China Eastern Airlines to refurbish their engines. The Shanghai Engine Centre will be refurbishing some 100 engines yearly for China Eastern. But the entire centre has a capacity to handle 300 engines a year, so it’s planning to expand. Read more about here, on their press release.

The theme was, of course, Halloween. It took us most of the day for the one photo, with make-up and preparation taking up most of the time. I must say though that we were very lucky to find such a beautiful location for the shot, it really makes it.
