Kokuyo (Japanese) and Bene (German) are two internationally renowned office furniture makers who joined forces together. Rimagine was called upon to do some photos of their new collection in their Shanghai showroom, since most of the furniture was oriented to the local market.

I was really interested in playing with different angles and light warmths as we went from sunlight, to halogen to studio lights. All and all I’m quite please with the results… so is the client, of course!

To see and show the different possibilities I did different lighting schemes on my new mountain bike.

Each one of these photos took an entire day in studio to create. And they are both compositions of multiple photos that have been put together into one.

The people at Lauten Audio found me though my website and I brought them over to Rimagine. Being based in the US, it was not possible for the client to be in studio to oversee the photo-shoot, and he wanted to try something different. After a few email exchanges and conversations, we had a better idea of what he was after, but not exactly… so we gave him multiple options, trying different things with the lighting. In the end he was very happy with the results.

Sometimes things slow down in the studio. Rarely, mind you. But, when they do I like to do tests with products that I rarely have the chance to work with. Or, try my hand at some new lighting ideas… without having to answer to the client looking over my shoulder.

I do this mainly out of curiosity, because I like playing around with different ideas. It’s sometimes a total disaster, but other times it’s a happy surprise worth putting in your portfolio.

Rimagine – The Photography Company wanted to create a creative talents database for Shanghai. Juju Directory. A great idea since it’s not always an easy task to find the right talents here, especially among expats as people keep coming and going. Models typically stay 2 ~ 3 months before heading back to their home countries.

So we wanted to create images internally that said that the directory is unique in it’s own, and pops out to the eye. ‘Ju’ in Chinese also means ‘orange’, as the fruit, so that’s where the inspiration comes from.

We don’t get this often, but as technology is getting smaller, slimmer and more minuscule by the minute, so are it’s internal components… makes total sense, of course! Well, taking nice photos of small, micro, products is a whole other challenge that Rimagine (and I) were faced with when Amphenol came to see us.

Amphenol makes mobile phone components like antennas, SIM card holders and the flipping hinge mechanism for flip phones. These are photos from the test we did for them.

There’s nothing simple when it comes to jewelry. Because of all the intricate details and the reflective surfaces that ornaments usually have, not to mention the designer’s attention to detail, it’s always a challenge. A welcome challenge.

Lada Pearls is an American jewelry company that wanted some nice pack-shots on gray background, playing with reflective surfaces. This was the result.

When you scroll down to the last picture you’ll probably think to yourself: “bah it’s not that big! common!” Unfortunately, the knock-out photo on white background doesn’t do justice to this massive machine. The thing is about 20 meters long.

Usually I need two meters to back-up for every meter that the machine measures… Of course, we found alternative solutions. But fitting it in my frame was not the only problem, lighting the whole product so it was nicely lit all along was also quite the challenge.

Thank god for Photoshop and computers is all I have to say. With Photoshop we were able to take and light different areas of the machine in different exposures and connect all of them together in one photo. Ah, the beautiful wonders of technology!! Thank you.
